Dr. P Sathya Sudhakar | Cancer Affecting Women - Part 2
In India, for every 8 minutes, a woman dies of cervical cancer. Cancer is still a taboo topic for most people, and awareness about cancer treatment is lacking. We want to do our part in this by answering some common questions about cancer affecting women.
Is breast cancer and related to irregular periods?
The main risk factor of breast cancer is obesity. An obese person will often get irregular periods because of the high oestrogen levels. Late marriage, improper or no breastfeeding, and obesity are risk factors for breast cancer. Thus it is better to be fit and stay healthy to prevent the occurrence of cancers.
What are the risk factors of cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is also common cancer affecting women next to breast cancer. Cerebral cancer causes include early marriages, early menstruation, late menopause, poor hygiene, and fewer sanitation facilities since cervical cancer is caused by viral infection.
Cervical cancer can be easily treated if it is diagnosed early. Efficient screening tests are available, and these are often done in medical camps. If the doctors find any abnormalities in the screening test, then the patient is sent for diagnostic procedures. With early diagnosis, cancer treatment is easier and efficient.
The common symptom of cervical cancer is white discharge. Normal white discharge is odorless and little in amount. But if there is increased white discharge and itching and smell, it is important to consult with the doctor immediately.
